Purchasing the equipment to start your Fluid Art journey can be a both a time consuming and very expensive process.

In this lesson we will list for you the MINIMUM equipment that you will need to complete the beginners section of this course

PAINT

WHAT IS PAINT?

All acrylic paints are made of three main materials:

• Pigment, Acrylic polymer, and Water

• The pigment and acrylic polymer get mixed in with the water and create an emulsion

• The water in the paint is used to help change the consistency of the paints

• Heavy body acrylics have less water than soft body acrylics

• Craft paints generally have more water than other forms of acrylic paints

• This greater portion of water in craft paints tends to give them a runnier consistency

BRAND & TYPE

When trying to determine which paint to use for your acrylic paint pouring, there are lots of variables to consider.

• Cost

• Availability of the brand in your area

• How well they mix with your pouring mediums

• The texture of the paint when dry

• How well the paints mix with other paints

For basic pouring as a beginner, we strongly recommend that you begin with relatively low-cost craft paints and then, as your skills develop, and experience grows select a superior paint to further enhance your artwork that you like, can easily purchase and is within your budget.

CRAFT PAINTS

• Craft paints are by far the cheapest and easiest acrylic paints to get a hold of.

• Almost every craft store has a few different brands of craft paints and large retailers usually also stock them

• These paints get used for many different hobbies and projects

• However, craft paints do not have as much pigment or as higher-quality binder as artist acrylic paints

• So, you cannot mix them with as much pouring medium as the better-quality paints

Our recommendation is to only mix up to one-part pouring medium to one-part craft paints and avoid adding any additional water

MID-RANGE (SOFT-BODY) PAINTS

Some mid-range brands that you may also wish to consider are:

PREPARING YOUR CANVAS

MIXING YOUR PAINTS

While you are learning and focusing on the basics there is no real need to indulge and spend money on lots of expensive paint
