On Method Acting
“Acting and living, and everything else, for that matter, is compassion.
What Lee and Stella [Adler] and Mira [Rostova] and Herbert [Berghof] were all espousing was compassion, an amplification of humanity, which is all that will save a scene or a play or a relationship or the world.
The world is so inordinately tiny not geographically, but spiritually. We shuffle along, happy to do the least amount of work, the least amount of exploration, perhaps because we feel we don't deserve all the riches that surround us.
Movies and plays and art and music and interaction with other people who sought compassion and understanding saved me. They will save us all. What is at the heart of The Method is compassion, empathy.
Go into your private moments and private spaces and realise all that you've felt and all that has been given to you and taken away. We will never murder; we might never give birth; we were not Napoleon. But within us are similar emotions, drives, feelings that can place us within an adjoining heart of a murderer; of Napoleon. Of anyone.
What the teachers were telling us, what Lee was telling his students, was to empathise with your own history and to merge with the histories of others.
Art means nothing if it does not connect with an audience, even it might be an audience of one. Honesty with our emotions will find a connection with the honesty of someone else with their own feelings. Otherwise, it is performing, which is not to be confused with acting.
Call it Method, call it acting, call it art, it is the painful, glorious compassion that joins us all, shared in one space at one time."

The 12 Common Archetypes
The Basics for Success in Acting
-
10The Universal Essence of your Character
INTRODUCTION
"Archetype" means "original or old "pattern, model or type". The "original pattern" of which all other similar persons, objects, or concepts are derived, copied or emulated. Carl Gustav Jung used the concept of archetype in his theory of the human psyche. He believed that universal, mythic characters archetypes reside within the collective unconscious of all people. Archetypes represent fundamental human motifs of our experience as we evolved; consequentially, they evoke deep emotions.
Actors can have faster access to their character’s psyche and relate deeply with their emotions and motivations when they understand their archetype. They are many different archetypes, but Jung defined twelve primary types that symbolise underlying human motivations.
Each type has its own set of values, meanings and personality traits. Also, the twelve types are divided into three sets of four, Ego, Soul and Self. Most, if not all, people have several archetypes at play in their personality construct; however, one archetype tends to dominate the personality in general. I usually choose one archetype per character. It is a good idea to know what is your character’s archetype is to have a more profound understanding of their innermost motivation, thoughts, feelings, purpose, hopes and fears.
How to use this guide: All the monologues in this have an archetype identifier. Refer to this guide the gain deeper insight while working on characterisation.

14Learn to Abolish your Limiting Beliefs for Ultimate Career Success
In this life mindsets is everything. The right mindset will lead you to places so beautiful you can’t imagine or dream. For Mind Mastery it’s imperative to abolish limiting beliefs.
In short, the sum of your beliefs creates an energy field around you. That energy field reflects on to the Universe communicating with source creation and attracting on to your life the things that you experience. Like attracts like; therefore, the energy that you reflect needs to match with the energy of the experiences you want to attract; this is the reason why we need to abolish limiting beliefs before we can experience the life want.

16Three Minute Warm-Up
Doing a good warm-up before any type of performance will have you in-the-moment from the second you walk into your scene. Don't miss it. This is a short one but very powerful.
Preparing for your warm-up:
Ensure that you are wearing conformable clothing and allow no distractions. Switch off your phone, and find a cosy space where you will not be disturbed. You might want to dim the lights and apply relaxing music for some of the sections. Make sure your space is free of clutter, safe as large and as neutral as possible. Relax and set your mind in a receptive mode with your intention. Before you start to visualise yourself getting exactly what you want to get out of the practice. If you are travelling or on tour, this is the perfect companion to take with you for quick and thorough prepping. The warm-up will help you relax, focus and get ready to perform at your highest level. Don't skip it.

17Breathing Exercises
When we came into the world and took our first breath, breathing became a natural thing that we were very good at doing. However, as we grow up and older we forget how to breathe properly.
I have caught myself holding my breath while watching a thriller while exercising while working while reading while concentrating and even while thinking. We hold our breath, and we breathe in all sorts of incorrect ways without realizing it. Poor breathing is a habit and can be challenging to shake.
As an Actor re-learning how to breathe adequately is imperative. Use these exercises as much as you can.

19Text Analysis
When you are researching and preparing for a role, your aim is not to learn and remember as many things as you can about your character as possible.
You aim to start thinking and acting like your character from day one of your research. To achieve this, your research is not to be merely intellectual; your research needs to be emotional and spiritual. It needs to involve psychological discoveries and action; to be more specific, you must use improvisation and imagination.
The Analysis of the Text has the main objective to find the subtext. Everything that is not written. What is the Character feeling and thinking, and why? How does it feel to be this character? Why?

21Total Relaxation Exercise
Confidence in acting comes through the mastery of the craft.
Method Acting techniques and exercises help you achieve mastery and truth in your acting. You learn to nurture and widen your imagination immensely. You become an expert on the use of the senses and on reaching high levels of concentration.
The Relaxation Exercise
Practice this before every performance, filming, or rehearsal. Also at home, every day if possible while you learn to develop your craft. Strasberg stated that relaxation and concentration are
“Two sides of the acting coin.”
The elimination of fear and tension is important. Actors need to relax their bodies to concentrate and have control over their minds.
Stanislavski said that relaxation is the emotional and physical state required to enter into what he called the “creative mood.” The mood in which great acting happens.
Relaxation encourages for fluidity, seamlessness, focus, and the merging of action and awareness these conditions are the recipe for good acting.
You can achieve a creative mood by doing the Relaxation Exercise.
The Relaxation Exercise is restorative. It’s also the exercise to be done before all the Sense Memory Exercises. You can do this exercise any time you lose concentration or become anxious or tense.
The Relaxation exercise will help break self-sabotaging unconscious habits that make it when you eliminate these physical and emotional habits, your muscles and nerves relax and your body becomes more responsive and sensitive. You become free from the limiting, reactive negative patterns caused by tension, while your imagination unleashes. You suddenly have access to new forms of expression and a sense of self.
Deeply ingrained forms of tension and stress will define you negatively. They are habits. These habits can be distracting and become ineffectual physical mannerisms that limit you to playing yourself. hard for you to express yourself.
-
22The Mirror Exercise
The initial sense memory exercises include activities and situations such as having a breakfast beverage, applying make- up or shaving.
Following we have a variety of physical exercises, known as Overall Sensations, which require movement and are fully enveloping experiences. They can include taking a bath or a shower. Assimilating extreme weather conditions such as cold or heat rain or strong wind or disoriented drunkenness. These exercises teach you, amongst other things, to engage parts of your body which are often ignored or forgotten about
-
23The Breakfast Beverage
The purpose of the sense Memory exercises is activating each of your senses, one by one, exploring in great detail imagined objects, people, activities, and places. Concentration and focus are the key elements We use the technique to access the feelings and behaviours of our characters. Training your mind, body, and senses helps you create a truthful presence on the stage.
STRASBERG STATED THAT ACTORS MUST UNDERSTAND THEIR OWN NATURE AND HOW TO RESPOND WITH THE SENSES BEFORE TRANSFORMING INTO A CHARACTER.
